Geese are a lot like ducks. They’re essentially really large ducks but they do have their differences. Raising geese isn’t as popular as it was in Colonial times. Geese used to be THE holiday bird but turkeys have take their place in recent times because they produce more meat and have a more mild flavor than goose meat, which is more like duck.
Choosing a breed:
There are quite a few breeds of Geese out there. any can be used for meat but the Piglrim and Embdens are the largest and this is the type you’ll find at a grocery store IF you’re grocery store carries goose which they usually only do around the holidays. If you are looking for goose eggs, the White China or Chinese Goose is the most prolific laying up to 100 eggs a season!
